Findings | The author critiques the conceptual and methodological framework of Matarasso's study and states that participation in arts activities is an insufficient means to tackle important societal issues such as deprivation and conflict. Merli has suggested that Matarasso's research has no internal validity because the survey instrument was not related to the study’s hypotheses, the questions were structured to lead to biased answers, and the research design has no control groups or longitudinal dimension. Further, she charges, his research has no external validity because the sample is not representative of the wider population or of all participatory arts activities. |
