Abstract This study presents a computational approach to generating infill designs in historic urban quarters, by utilizing urban knowledge. The approach consists of three consecutive phases. The data collection phase includes the steps of collecting, cleaning, combining, and visualizing urban data from the historic city. The data analysis phase contains data mining techniques to process the spatial urban data. The last phase comprises a Cellular Automata-based design model which generates conceptual building massing proposals. The approach provided continuity in the urban texture by generating new design proposals compatible with the existing texture in terms of formal qualities. New design solutions generated by Cellular Automata rules became context-sensitive, as urban data which was specific to the particular location were collected during the design process. Thus, the approach can guide designers in the early stages of design process by generating multiple design alternatives and letting designers customize the solutions for further design operations. © 2022, Kim Williams Books, Turin.
