Abstract | This chapter describes the implementation and target outcomes of Design Your Neighborhood (DYN), a place-based action civics curriculum in Nashville, Tennessee that teaches urban design as a tool for engaging youth in community development processes. Through charting the evolution of this initiative over the course of three years and multiple iterations, this case study addresses the tension between impact and scale when doing participatory action research and community development with youth. We offer a practice-oriented framework for leveraging these modalities to decrease disparity in the built environment, potentially catalyzing social action. Drawing on theories of positive youth development and empowerment, we describe youth engagement in the design process as a method for redistributing power in community development practice. We discuss the importance of increasing opportunities for youth-adult partnerships in community development and the implications for urban design and city planning processes that center youths' knowledge and local expertise. © Randy Stoecker and Adrienne Falcón 2022.
