Abstract Technology is always improving to deliver the best for science. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a promising study area. This article examines the state of the art in Egypt for employing AI for urban design and development. The research method included a systemic review of past studies, followed by a designed questionnaire to investigate the potentials and challenges for applying AI in urban design and planning. Five points were investigated in this study: purpose, time and method as well as potential fields of its application. This is in addition to investigating expected benefits and identifying root causes for hindering its application. The result is particularly important with the increasing new city development and shall benefit academic and industry outreach open up new opportunities for technological integration in the urban design process. © 2022 IEEE.
