Abstract This chapter presents work undertaken between 2016 and 2018 as part of a government-commissioned project concerning the longan agricultural landscape in southern Taiwan. Longan is a tropical tree that produces edible fruit. The nature of the fruit means that it can usually not be preserved or transported. In the hill areas of southern Taiwan, there is a landscape of longan trees and orchards and associated roasting stoves. Public Participation Geographic Information Systems is a method used in studies related to public affairs and in community development. The data and community trust built throughout the research project will be important for further planning and heritage conservation, including the possible promotion of projects related to the local economy, tourism, travel, and so on. It is widely recognised that conservation of cultural landscapes is a dynamic process and one in which the continuity of function of a landscape is essential. © 2023 selection and editorial matter, Steve Brown and Cari Goetcheus; individual chapters, the contributors.
