| Abstract | Participation in musical culture is a central aim of music teaching and learning. At the same time, musical-cultural participation is said to have positive effects on the general life satisfaction of children and adolescents. Based on the capability approach, we empirically examine the extent to which participation in music culture in formal and informal contexts affects domain-specific life satisfaction in music as well as general subjective life satisfaction. In addition, personality traits (Big Five) are included as predictors, as they are considered relevant for the assessment of individual life satisfaction. It can be shown that participation in music culture in formal (but not informal) contexts positively influences general subjective life satisfaction only indirectly via domain-specific life satisfaction in music. The Big Five personality factors make an additional significant contribution to explaining the variance of general and domain-specific life satisfaction. © 2022, The Author(s). |
