Abstract | This chapter aims to complement the plethora of ways to look at the future of urban habitation by focusing on its social dimension. It starts with a brief outline of social design, with its characterization as a discursive moment within the design community, and listing references to some of its relevant conversations. The chapter highlights some examples of service design methods in the context of habitation and observed implications. It reflects on those common implications between the different projects and highlights the expanded opportunities given by emerging forms of knowledge, techniques and design tools, as new means for designers and decision-makers to respond to future challenges in urban habitation; innovative and cross-disciplinary approaches to inform and inspire an environmentally and socially more resilient built environment. To ensure that both the 'hardware' or physical infrastructure, as well as the 'software' or community relationships work in harmony together to create the conditions for caring communities to thrive. © 2022 John Wiley & Sons Ltd. |
