Abstract This article outlines the results of 2004 workshop held by the Department of Canadian Heritage and the Canada Council for the Arts, which discussed the various dimensions of a possible research initiative to study the social effects of culture. (This initiative was not pursued at the time but was revived in 2015.)

Metodology Workshop of experts organised in Montréal to discuss the question "What are the social effects of participation in arts and heritage?". The experts included university scholars, cultural practitioners, policymakers, and researchers from various national arts councils. Participants came from Canada, the United States, Europe, and the Pacific. The workshop was the first stage of a research program called the Initiative to Study the Social Effects of Culture (ISSEC).
