Abstract Primary therapeutic benefits of a music therapy small group utilizing the method of free improvisation are presented. A detailed description of how the free improvisation method was structured and implemented is discussed. The three primary benefits; self-expression, mind-body integration, and social skill development are explicated. The main thesis of this paper suggests that addressing and integrating these benefits may work to improve patient mental health and behavior. © 2022 the authors.
