Abstract | This chapter provides a detailed exposition of the approaches to computational urban design while situating it against similar prevailing methods. Through concrete case studies developed in design, engagement, and speculative contexts, it lends a practical focus to computational design and illustrates both its current potentials and future promises with the aid of artificial intelligence and machine learning. The chapter outlines a step-by-step process for how to generate a computation model. It is worth noting that the process for constructing a thoughtful computational design model is slightly different from the order of its operations. The chapter focuses on a few case studies that highlight the range of possibilities and complexities that arise in computational design. The case studies demonstrate a variety of applications of computational design, from exploring expansive sets of options to enabling citizens in voicing their needs. © 2022 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
