Abstract This exploratory report examines the relationship between four cultural activities (reading books, attending live performances, visiting art galleries, and attending movie theatres) and various social effects. It also conducts a brief literature review of the subject.

Summary:



the arts are an integral part of many canadians lives. in addition people with rich social connections are more likely to have housing jobs good health and life satisfaction. cultural participants and nonparticipants have a fairly similar sense of belonging to their province. this section explores the relationship between cultural activities and: health happiness rating of life as a whole cultural participants have better selfassessments of health than nonparticipants. in particular: the percentage of book readers volunteering for a nonprofit organization % is much higher than the percentage of nonreaders %.
