Abstract This book investigates the role of citizen journalism in railroading social and political changes in sub-Saharan Africa. Participatory politics and citizen journalism in a networked Africa: A connected continent. Muneris chapter aims to explain the reasons why in his view the advent of new commu- nication technologies has not led to the wider participation in public life promised by citizen journalism. Joseph Mujere and Wesley Mwatwaras study compares the role played by citizen journalism via Facebook WhatsApp and Twitter in Zimbabwes and elections devoting particular attention to the emergence of counter- publics resistant to state power. She is also a freedom of expression activist and serves as chairperson of the South African National Editors Forums Ethics and Diversity subcommittee. Her main research interests are political communication comparative media studies media and democratization media and elections and Internet and politics.
