Abstract In order to attract obese adolescents who are often reluctant to engage in traditional exercise, new forms of physical activity are needed. The purpose of the study was to investigate the impact of dance‐based exergaming on a diverse sample of obese adolescents' perceived competence to exercise, psychological adjustment and body mass index (BMI ).

physical activity is lower among adolescent minorities than their non-hispanic white counterparts. sixty-one adolescents were assessed for eligibility with not meeting inclusion cri- teria and none declining participation; therefore adolescents were randomized exergaming; control. though data was not specifically collected regard- ing participants ability to exercise at a higher level of difficulty over time all participants in the exergame condition needed to increase their level of difficulty in order to have participants maintain thr suggesting cardiovascular benefits of the exergame intervention. with the surge in development of new exergames it is possible that exergaming will have the potential to continue to attract youth with more interesting games and different modalities of exercise eg wii fit. from a public health perspective results from this study may also suggest that group exergaming may be a viable addition to the school setting as part of a physical education programme or after school programme for obese youth.
